Holy Wednesday 🪙 Holy Wednesday, also known as “Spy Wednesday,” commemorates several events that happened during Passion Week. The most prominent of these events was the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot. According to the New Testament accounts, Judas agreed to betray Jesus to the religious authorities in exchange for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16). This single act of betrayal set in motion the events that would lead to Jesus' arrest, trial, and crucifixion. The betrayal of Jesus by Judas, while difficult, fulfills prophecy and helps to solidify Jesus as the Messiah. Psalm 41:9 says, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.” This passage is often interpreted as a foreshadowing of the betrayal of Jesus by one of his close associates. Zechariah 11:12-13 also speaks of the payment of thirty pieces of silver for the betrayal of the Shepherd. Also during this day, preparations were being made for the annual Passover feast. The Tuesday of Holy Week was dramatic to say the least... If Mondays experience in the temple was marked by Jesus' living parable of cleansing Gods house, Tuesdays experience was marked by direct & verbal confrontation from the Pharisees & the Sadducees (the "Sanhedrin")They demanded to know who gave Jesus the right to behave as He has in their temple (Mark 11:27-33). The entire confrontation was an attempt to put Jesus in his place & to force him to yield to the power & authority of the Sanhedrin. When they tried this tactic, they failed. Jesus asked smarter questions & gave clearer answers. (Matthew 21:23-27). When they tried to question His motives, He exposed their hearts.When they attempted to intimidate, He never showed the slightest sign of backing down. They tried to discredit the previous days of ministry, but there were quite literally miracles walking among them in the Temple. (Matthew 21:14). Jesus had turned the tables on the Sanhedrin the day before (Matthew 21:12), but today He had done it again—only this time with further-reaching implications. When they demanded that He submit to their authority, He exposed them as liars. If they had no integrity, they held no real authority. This forced the religious leaders' hand. If they wanted to contain Jesus' influence among the people, they would have to rely on more than warnings. They would have to remove Him-because it was clear that He would not yield. After Jesus has confronted the leaders, he decided to spend the rest of his time in the Temple so that he could teach the people around Him. (Matthew 21:28-23:39) This would be the last time that Jesus would publicly teach in the temple as a free man. When Jesus left the temple that day, the chief priests and the scribes sought how to arrest Him by stealth and kill Him (Mark 14:1). They knew they couldn't take His life from Him solely on the strength of the charges they meant to bring-not if He defended Himself, anyway. But He would not. Instead, by His silence, He would offer up His life for a world of blasphemers, traitors, and liars who so desperately needed to be opposed and upset. This was what Jesus had come to do.

But what happened on Monday? Have you ever wondered what happened on the Monday after Jesus' entry into Jerusalem? Let's talk about it. After Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, there are two things that we know for sure.... First, we know that Jesus cursed a fig tree that bears no fruit. (Matt. 21:18-22) According to the account, Jesus and his disciples were traveling from Bethany to Jerusalem and Jesus saw a fig tree by the side of the road. He went up to it hoping to find fruit to eat, but there were only leaves, as it was not the season for figs. In response, Jesus cursed the tree, saying "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." On the surface, the story seems harsh and confusing. However, the fig tree was a common symbol of Israel and the Jewish people, and the fruit of the fig tree was often used to represent the spiritual and moral condition of Israel. By cursing the fig tree, Jesus was making a symbolic statement about the spiritual barrenness of Israel, which had failed to bear the fruit of faithfulness to God. Second, we know that Jesus cleanses the temple of money changers and merchants. (Matt. 21:12-17) According to scripture, Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem and found merchants selling sacrificial animals and exchanging money for temple currency. In a fit of righteous anger, he overturned the tables of the money changers and drove out the merchants, declaring that the temple was a house of prayer, not a den of thieves. By clearing the temple of money changers, Jesus was protesting the commercialization of religion and the corruption that had crept into the temple system. The money changers were charging exorbitant fees for their services, taking advantage of the people's need to purchase sacrificial animals and exchange their money for temple currency. The Passage & The Promise: Week 8 - Matthew 5:10 The Passage: Matthew 5:10 focuses on the believer who experiences persecution. This verse highlights the idea that a genuine commitment to God’s ways may lead to opposition and persecution from those who oppose righteousness. The Promise: The promise associated with this Beatitude is that those who endure persecution for the sake of righteousness will inherit the kingdom of heaven. This speaks to the idea that the faithful can find comfort and assurance in their suffering, knowing that their ultimate reward is in the kingdom of heaven.
 Matthew 5:10 encourages each of us to remain steadfast in our commitment to righteousness, even in the face of persecution, with the promise of a future reward in the kingdom of heaven. The Passage & The Promise : Week 6 - Matthew 5:8 The Passage: This beatitude focuses strictly on the condition of the heart. To be “pure in heart” means to have a heart that is undivided, sincere & free from hypocrisy and deceit. Being pure in heart suggests genuine and authentic commitment to God, a heart that is not driven by impure motives or hiddens agendas. The Promise: The promise attached to this Beatitude is simple and complex at the same time. Those who are pure in heart will see God. This does not refer to physical sight, but rather a deep, spiritual understanding and communion with God. It implies an intimate experience of God’s presence. An experience that brings closeness and clarity to your relationship with God. The Passage & The Promise : Week 5 - Matthew 5:7 The Passage: This verse emphasizes mercy and how it should be shown to others. To be “merciful” is to show compassion, forgiveness, kindness and empathy to those who may be in a vulnerable position. To be merciful could also be showing these things to people who have wronged you. We are all human, and mercy reflects a generous and forgiving attitude that we all wish to be recipients of. The Promise: The promise attached to this Beatitude is reciprocal: those who show mercy will receive it. It seems simple, highlighting the idea that God’s mercy is shown to those who show mercy to others. The Passage & The Promise : Week 4 - Matthew 5:6 The Passage: We see Christians hungering for many things: power, authority, success, comfort, happiness – but how many of us hunger and thirst for righteousness? Unfortunately, this verse describes a profound hunger that cannot be satisfied by a snack…This is a deep longing that will most likely endure and will never be completely satisfied on this side of heaven. We all know what it’s like to be hungry and thirsty, and this verse uses the metaphor of hunger to vividly portray an intense craving. Those who “hunger and thirst for righteousness” are those who desperately seek to live in accordance with God’s will. Those who long for justice, moral uprightness and a deep, right relationship with God. Like the previous Beatitudes, there is a promise attached to this verse. The Promise is this- that those who have a passionate desire for righteousness will no longer hunger and thirst but instead, they will be satisfied. The Passage & The Promise : Week 3 - Matthew 5:5 The Passage: “Meekness” is often misunderstood in this context. Meekness, as Jesus is describing it, is not about weakness and it's not about lack of assertiveness. Instead, meekness is the idea of strength under control. Like a strong stallion trained to do an important job instead of running wild. Meekness exercises power and authority while also expressing gentleness and humility. The Promise: There is a promise that is also attached to meekness; an inheritance. The promise attached to meekness is that those who embody this quality will "inherit the earth." This inheritance can be understood in a couple of ways. It could refer to a present reality, suggesting that those who are meek will experience a sense of peace and contentment in their lives. Alternatively, it may also have a future eschatological meaning, indicating that the meek will ultimately inherit the blessings and rewards of God's kingdom. The Passage & The Promise : Week 2 - Matthew 5:4 The Passage: This verse builds off of the previous theme of humility and spiritual dependence on God. In this context, “those who mourn” refers not only to those who have experienced loss, but those who mourn over their own sinfulness and the sinfulness of our world. In short, “those who mourn”, actually mourn over SIN and its effects. The Promise: Jesus takes the time to teach that there is a special comfort and a special blessing for those who feel deep grief and deep sorrow for our fallen world. There is a peace and a comfort that will come for those who long for restoration. “Comfort” implies that God responds. He listens and he responds to the mourning of His people. The Passage & The Promise : Week 1 - Matthew 5:3 The Passage: What does it mean to be poor in spirit? This is something that has been long grappled with. Being “poor in spirit” doesn’t necessarily mean that you lack material wealth; rather, it suggests spiritual poverty and one's need for total dependence on God. It is an attitude of humility, acknowledging our need for God’s mercy and His grace. It’s recognizing that we cannot achieve righteousness on our own. As a follower of Christ. We must rely on God for his guidance, His strength, and his mercy for salvation. In this passage, Jesus highlights the idea that those who approach God with a humble and repentant heart, are blessed. The Promise: They are promised that the kingdom of heaven is assured to those who are fully dependent on God. Those who rely on God will experience the fullness of God’s reign and his blessings.
